Stanley 2010 Good Design Award winner!
Just discovered that this "Man Lunch" case which I designed has been awarded a 2010 Good Design Award. They don't have a gallery up, so I dropped in an image below. Here is the link to their site: http://www.chi-athenaeum.org/

MoMA store product!

So the mechanism I designed, which is included in this product designed by a fellow industrial designer at work, will be carried in the MoMA store soon - too cool.
You can buy one here!
UPDATE w/ Link: Utility patent awarded...

...for the ball and socket hinge included on the lid of this water bottle I designed a while back.
Woo hoo!
Update: if you're having trouble sleeping, you can read the patent docs here

Frankie!

Here's a 20 minute lunch time doodle. Halloween is coming soon, which brings to mind a number of fun things to draw up. Enjoy!

Took a weekend trip to Portland and I cranked out some quick sketches of our fellow freeway travelers - here's a sample.

Body Hammer : : Completed! 20090625

Body Hammer, 9" x 12", watercolor.
This belongs to my father-in-law. He wouldn't let me borrow it, so I had to shoot the reference on site. He' obviously put a ton of hours on this hammer, including bouncing off his current project, '50 Ford COE truck.

Body Hammer 20090622
Finally found my way back to the studio and have started another
painting. This is my first attempt at using a watercolor block, which
I am enjoying so far. A block is essentially a stack of water color
paper that is pre stretched, eliminating the tedious stretching process.

Started a new painting...
...finally!
After 2 weeks split between vacation and China, I was in art-making
withdrawal. I feel much better now.

Sketches this week...
...from my moleskine.
Spent too much time out of town to complete a painting this week, so I'll substitute with 2 sketches out of my moleskine. These were done during my flights to chicago and back.

Tin Snips WIP (4)...
All right, this is where I stopped last night. Lightened up the overall color of the nibblers and am much happier with the tone. fun stuff...
Tin Snips WIP (3)...
Here's a look at my first quick pass at modeling the hilights and shadows over my dark blue nibblers. I really didn't like the color - much too dark.
Tin Snips WIP (2)...
Here I decided to experiment a bit with a darker, more blueish base color for the business end of the snips. The base color sets a ground tone for creating hilights and shadows.
These colors I layed down fairly thinned out so that I can see the pencil drawing underneath.

Tin Snips WIP (1)...
Since I have a snazzy little iPhone, I figured I'd snap some process shots of the current painting and try my hand at blogging this creation.
What you see in this photo is my drawing table with the watercolor paper stretched and mounted onto gator board.
I took some reference photos of the tin snips (also pictured and handy for reference) and played with the composition and scale in photoshop until I set it up the way I wanted. I then printed out to final scale.
The next step was to create a watercolor wash back ground, which is the paint you see on the board in this photo. I then created an under drawing in pencil over the water color background, then sprayed a clear coat over it to protect the water color paints from reactivating when I apply the acrylic paints.
